Back to the Drawing Board

My husband and I went to a Lutheran Church last week. We found that they taught from the Book of Concord, give infant baptisms, and allow female pastors. This is not the church for us. My husband has asked me to do some research and to try to find "the one" before we go to a new church. I feel like there are so many denominations out there that I hardly know where to start. Obviously, this is a decision we have to make on our own, but out of curiosity (if you feel comfortable sharing of course) what church do you attend?

We just want a church that we feel follows the perfect Word of God as He wrote it in the Bible. Is that so much to ask? :)

(Also, totally off topic - our grass started to grow!!! We'll be outside rolling around in it in no time!)

We attend a Baptist church that is part of the Baptist General Conference. We also love the Christian & Missionary Alliance. :) Very solid, sound Biblical truths there.

Hey! I go to the Vineyard Christian Fellowship. It's nondenominational - and there are several in PA (I counted 13 on the website, http://www.vineyardusa.org/churches/church_search.aspx).

I've visited many of the Vineyards across the US - some are great, some are good, some are struggling. I can't guarantee that you'll love the one you try out (considering I'm out here on the West Coast and haven't been to one in PA yet), but you won't know till you try! :)

We love the one we attend currently. Our pastor is teaching on the Gospels right now. He's talking about how (a very important) job as a Christian is to LOVE. Love God, love his people, and show them who Jesus is. Love ALL his people, not just Christians, not just the ones who look like they're doing good. Love the outcasts, the lonely, the sick, the poor, the oppressed, the lost. I really see the Lord at work there. It's been great for our family.

In all the Vineyard churches I've been to...

We don't do infant baptism - baptism is a choice that we consciously make when we are aware of what it truly means to be born again.

We only teach out of the Holy Bible (naturally, as far as I'm concerned!)

And as far as women pastors...hmm. I know of one that has a woman pastor. I know of a few that have women pastors who are the "Pastor of Counseling" or "Pastor of Worship and the Arts" etc. So I guess you'd have to see what the ones in PA have. Personally, I don't have a problem with that. But I just wanted to make sure you knew!

Just thought I'd share. May the Lord speak to you and lead you to the church he's calling you to. :)

We've gone through this every time we've moved. Last move we ended up going to a home church w/ about 7-8 families that totalled about 50people. This time we found a Family-Integrated church from the Vision Forum website. I would encourage you and dh to pray for God to drop a church in your laps...He's done this for us and I am most thankful!
Blessings,
Amy

We attend a reformed baptist church. So far to us it's the most biblical. There are a few in Penn if I'm remembering correctly, just not sure if they're close to you. You could google it though. May God bless your search and put you in the perfect place! We are on the mend and right now are visiting a reformed baptist church but have been members of reformed baptist churches for many years (my husband went to one and I to another before we were married).

I'm actually going to be blogging about this over the next couple of weeks. I was in the hospital having a difficult labor with my first child, calling out to God and feeling like such a hypocrite - here I was calling in my time of need and ignoring God most of the rest of the time. That was the beginning of my return to an active Christian Faith Life.

Even then however, it was a few more years until we started returning to church regularly. Then my sister started attending a Fundamentalist church and she started telling me all of these things that were wrong with my church and how everything my church taught was without foundation and not biblical.

Now I couldn't believe the church made up stuff for no reason, so I started to look for the answers. It was through study of scripture and of church history that I reverted back to my Catholic faith.

I must admit I'm curious as to why your husband's asked you to pick the church, rather than doing so himself.

Hi, I was browsing full quiver blogs and say your post. There are different synods as they are called in the Lutheran church. We have been going to a Missouri synod Lutheran church for about a year now and just love it. I have a background of Church of Christ and Baptist and my husband was Church of God of Prophecy and Assembly of God and this is the first church we have been too that the word of God is actually read out loud in whole passages. We have been very happy to have our children raised in this kind of environment. Our 9 and 6 year old have the Lords prayer completely memorized and are almost done with the Apostles creed just by hearing it every Sunday.
I did have a hard time with infant baptism at first and struggled for a long time. After my mom, husband and I researched and studied I do believe now that it has a biblical basis. Not that I think it is worth arguing and debating when there are so many other important black and white things.
Anyways, I hope this helps in some small way. I know how hard it is to find a good church. We live in a very small town in AZ and after many years in a bad church and then even having to go as far as doing a home church with our family and my parents and siblings we are extremely grateful for the church we are now attending even though I would have never thought in a million years I would ever say that I am Lutheran. When God is leading your path you never know where you'll end up!
Hope you have a great day!
